Meet trip leader Adam Zions at Alachua County’s newest public use natural area. Part of the Barr Hammock Preserve’s 5700 acres of hardwood forest, marsh, and wet prairie, the Levy Lake Loop provides excellent opportunities to see a wide variety of birds.
To reach the trailhead, drive south on US-441 from Gainesville. Just before Micanopy and across from Lake Wauberg, turn right onto Wacahoota Road (County Road 18). Go over the I-75 overpass, take your first left onto SE 11th Drive, and follow it down to the parking area.
Difficulty: 3+. Hike is about six miles, so bring food and plenty of water.
